COP28: Let’s Get Started!

Dubai (United Arab Emirates) welcomes the Conferences of the Parties 28 (COP28), which started yesterday 30th November 2023.

What’s about? COPs are how the world organizes its collective response to the global challenge of climate change. United Nations gather worldwide leaders, experts, and special attendees to discuss programs and how to meet urgent goals on the matter.

During the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was sealed and it established the launch of these annual congresses. Kind of an impactful choice from the institutional point of view. Indeed, COPs are the stage to act and plan policies. For instance, the 21st session of the Conferences of the Parties in 2015 led to the landmark Paris Agreement, where countries pledged to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions this century and limit global average warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

As mentioned, the 2023 meetings are hosted by United Arab Emirates in Dubai, from 30th November to 12th December. Two-week program, alongside the formal negotiations among institutions’ representatives and delegates from all the nations and sovereign entities. Worth to be followed and observed – how come? COP28 is a milestone moment: nations for the first time formally review progress since the Paris Agreement, under a global stocktake – that is a process for countries and stakeholders to see where they are collectively making progress towards meeting the goals of limit global warming. COP28 brings the world together at a pivotal moment of shaping a collective commitment to climate action.

COP28 needs ambitious decisions.

The program showcases new, neglected themes, including threats to human health, steps for relief and recovery from climate change, and a “just transition” in trade and energy. It delivers connected messages across four over-arching solutions: technology and innovation; inclusion; frontline communities; and finance.

The Conferences of the Parties in Dubai are designed for open consultation from governments, business, civil society, youth, and minorities. Nevertheless, COP28 Presidency has been generating several discussions and mediatic controversies. The interests, as well as the expectations, are high and strongly explained by activists all around the world.
